Description:

GDM sometimes (randomly) starts with the wrong (very low) resolution. In most cases this is only an aesthetic problem, but in some cases the user selection dialog is off the screen, making it impossible to log in.

I really don't know what package is at fault here, but it's pretty annoying so I'm reporting anyways. I also don't know if this is an upstream or integration issue, so please direct me to the correct place if this is not the right place to report this problem.

Additional info:
gdm 2.30-1
xorg-xserver 1.7-6-3
xf86-video-intel 2.10.0-1
extra/libxrandr 1.3.0-1

I should add that I don't use an xorg.conf.

gdm doesn't handle resolutions. xorg does.

Why doesn't the problem happen with my Gnome session then?
Comment by Jan de Groot (JGC) - Thursday, 23 December 2010, 08:57 GMT
I have this problem everyday. I fix it by logging in, closing the laptop lid and reopening it again. According to the logfiles, I have a TV attached with low resolution, so the driver puts the laptop display in clone mode with the same resolution as the ghost TV. This must be a bug in the kernel or the driver, it's not gdm's fault.

I suggest this bug be relabeled to [xorg] or something similar, as I know have the same problem with kdm. The X log files also incorrectly report that I have a TV attached to my laptop.

This bug has been reported upstream, the report contains a possible fix for this issue which has not made it to the kernel yet.
