Description:
After the latest big update (Xorg, Mesa, xf86-video-ati, kernel26-2.6.33 ...) I have artefacts on my screen in KDE. All Menus and Plasma panels are unreadable and have artefacts.
Downgrading xf86-video-ati 6.12.192-1 to previous stable version xf86-video-ati 6.12.4-3 fixes the problem. I'm using the radeon driver for my Radeon Mobility 7500 card.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
xf86-video-ati-6.12.192-1

* config and/or log files etc.
Screenshot of artefacts is attached

$ lspci | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon IGP 330M/340M/350M

Steps to reproduce:
Update to xf86-video-ati-6.12.192-1

Sorry, forgot to add xf86-video-ati to the title...
Also: unsing KMS only shows me a black screen (also in X), but boots OK. I have it diabled

please try to boot with kernel boot option "pci=nomsi"

Thakns for your fast answer! :-)
I've got it working without artefacts and without KMS: I just had to delete Xorg.conf...

More details:
When KMS is enabled to start early, the PC always hangs during module loading. KMS enabled for late start always keeps the screen black.
With kernel26 build for early start (with radeon in Modules array of mkinitcpio.conf ), but radeon.modeset=0 in grub to disable KMS, the PC starts fine, but direct rendering is disabled for software rasterizer.
Kernel26 build without radeon in modules array of mknitcpio.conf and disabled KMS works fine with direct rendering.

pci=nomsi didn't make a difference for me.

Boot KMS late mode and add "verbose" to the kernel append line. Maybe your card has trouble loading the firmware or initialising the drm module.
Comment by Daniel (Doehni) - Wednesday, 14 April 2010, 20:04 GMT
I did that, but couldn't read anything, because it scrolls too fast and then after the modules the screen goes black again.
I managed to copy the dmesg file and Xorg.0.log and attached them. What other files could help you?
   dmesg (166.8 KiB)
   Xlog.txt (26 KiB)

Please report it upstream, maybe ask before here: http://lists.x.org/mailman/listinfo/xorg-driver-ati.

There's also another Gentoo User having issues in KDE. Can you confirm that other desktops environments work?
Comment by Daniel (Doehni) - Thursday, 15 April 2010, 12:40 GMT
Yes, other desktop enviroments do work (XFCE, Openbox...) But KDE apps always had the bug when using my xorg.conf
Now looking at upstream :)

CC'ed it.

Is this still an issue with latest testing packages?
Comment by Daniel (Doehni) - Thursday, 27 May 2010, 23:26 GMT
Installed xorg-1.8 (with radeon driver and such) from testing. Kernel is still from core (won't update due to vhba-module).
Tested it with KMS late start, but there was no difference to the olg Xorg-1.7 (after module loading the screen went black, but starting went on fine)
Disabled KMS also worked great on new xorg-1.8

Added kernel.log

Kernel 2.6.34 has lots of Ati KMS fixes. You should give it a try.

Also tried it with kernel 2.6.34. Seems to be still the same problem...

How's state with .35 kernels in testing and recent Xorg?
Comment by Daniel (Doehni) - Monday, 16 August 2010, 16:19 GMT
With .35 kernels from testing (kernel26 2.6.35.2-1) everything works fine! Late start and early start work, without "pci=nomsi" boot option.
:D :D
