Already working on a way to do this cleanly w/o having mysql as a dep for postfix (by having a postfix-mysql package).

The debain package does this. You might have a look at http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/postfix.html if you haven't already. The diff listed under "source files" appears to contain the required changes to spit out a dist_mysql.so
A bunch of other stuff in there too, and I am not sure how much of it is needed. Might be worth a look at least, if you haven't already.

Any progress dale?

Not yet, I'm trying to get this working with SASL support also for the next postfix release. It's hard to get a postfix to use mysql without making it depend on the mysql package, it seems.

I don't think depending on mysql would be that bad. I would say 50% of the time the mysql instance will be on the same host anyway. The rest of the time, I don't think having the mysql package installed would be that big of a deal.

The other option would be to seperate the mysql daemon from the mysql client libs, and have a package for each. I believe that is how many other distros do it.

Dale,

To the extent that I can be helpful with any of this, I'm about to have a substantial need for postfix+postgresql+sasl in the near future, and I'm going to be able to devote some time to doing this at work, I think. Seems as though we may as well pool efforts/experiences.

I'm finally ready to jump ship on qmail and switch to postfix!

I was almost done getting this working and postfix 2.2 came out... Haven't looked at it since then, though. Any time you can put towards it is welcome and I'll be around to answer questions that I know the answer to, but I'm not sure how much extra time I'll have.

mysql has been added via the postfix-mysql package.
