Since the recent switch to xz, I believe that when someone creates a src archive, they will be unable to upload it since you can not upload xz files to the aur currently.

Reason for closing:  Won't implement
Additional comments about closing:  There's no PEAR module with XZ support, also I think we're gonna stick to a single file format unless there's any problem with the status quo. KISS.

src files are not affected by this change and are kept in gz format. Those files are usually very small anyway.

The problem with this is, that if you have .xz in makepkg.conf as your src format, then you will be unable to upload without changing to gz first.

I was reviewed as one might do this, but I need to access a file that is not in the repository aur.git, Archive/Tar.php than what would be achieved see who handles the compression / decompression of files, and there need to add support for xz

This was our default before:

# WARNING: Do NOT modify these variables unless you know what you are
# doing.
#
PKGEXT='.pkg.tar.gz'
SRCEXT='.src.tar.gz'

This is our default now:

# WARNING: Do NOT modify these variables unless you know what you are
# doing.
#
PKGEXT='.pkg.tar.xz'
SRCEXT='.src.tar.gz'

Read the warning.

It's a valid FR. The tools are made to serve us, not to bind us to one way of doing things.

That being said, "patches welcome"?

Distributions using pacman are free to use whatever extensions they see fit, and Arch has not mentioned anything about making the same move for source tarballs. In that case, why go through the extra trouble (for both users and developers of AUR)? The way I see it, this FR was accidental (i.e reporter thought src tarballs would be standardised to xz).

There seems to be some confusion, can someone switch this from a bug report to a feature request?
Comment by Ray Rashif (schivmeister) - Monday, 07 June 2010, 20:13 GMT
Ahh, you're right. If it's an FR then it is indeed OK to leave this open.

This is a valid feature request.
