Upgraded from metacity 2.8.1-1 to 2.8.6-1.

If I open any window e.g. epihpany, nautilus, etc., everything hangs. I am unable to type anything, even ctrl+alt+del and switching to another vc...

Downgraded to 2.8.1-1.

Severity is critical because it forces a hard reset, which mihgt cause data loss...

my guess is that you use the composite extension with has been marked by xorg as unstable that's why it isn't on at default ;)
try turning it off in your xorg.conf and report back
