Did you actually install archlinux before skipping to configuration? If the shadow package isn't installed, you can't set the root password from system configuration either.

Yes, I installed base packages. However config files were empty.

I tried installation again and found out that grub installation failed because of shared /boot partition. Although process failed there was no explicit warning so I just hit continue.
