can not find --tsver configure option. What is it?

He means --with-tdsver=VERSION. Current default is 5.0. Details at http://www.freetds.org/userguide/choosingtdsprotocol.htm

Matter of opinion... what compatibility are you looking for? From what I can tell, 7.0 actually would be the most compatible.
