Description:

Many times there is a lot of output following the password prompt for a LUKS encrypted root during bootup. The amount of output (if any) doesn't seem to be consistent either: I have one computer where it almost always happens, but without any hardware changes or anything like that, there occasionally won't be any output after the prompt; I have another computer where there is usually no output after the password prompt, but also without any changes, there is occasionally a few lines of output after the password prompt.

What can be done about this? What longer to ask? Rewrite the prompt?

This is especially confusing for users who know enough to enter the password at boot, but don't know to look for the prompt a few lines up. They think the computer has just hung.

Additional info:
* package version(s)

core/mkinitcpio 0.5.28-1
core/cryptsetup 1.0.7-1
core/udev 146-2

* config and/or log files etc.
mkinitcpio.conf has the encrypt hook.
