Is the search box not enough?

Oh, of course, but I think it isn't clear. Anytime when I come to site I'm trying to find link to packages and every time forget that search box. Because I'm seeing at the menu and thingkin: "So, Home, Forums, AUR, Wiki, Bugs, AUR... Hm.. Where is packages?.." and then I go to the google.

I'm all with you to keep things simple, guys, and at the same time I think that link is nesessary.

Oh, okey, more reasons to do it.
-----------
If I have found package and go to the page (for example from google or any other way) I see something like that:
http://www.archlinux.org/packages/testing/i686/udev

In the case of AUR like that:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24117

In the fist case I can't just go to to the packages list or just search another package, I should go to the mail page and use search form.
In the second case there are several ways to find more:
- I can just use search form at the top of AUR page
- I can open main AUR page by link AUR from top menu

The same situation is when I'm, for example, on the Wiki at the moment, I have to go to the main page if I need to search some package.

Ok, now I your idea makes more sense. It might be worth closing this bug and opening a new one with the above description to start with a fresh bug report :)

@Thayer: Is there anyway to make the "package search" box on the main page stand out a bit more? Also, perhaps link the words to archlinux.org/packages ?
Comment by Thayer Williams (thayer) - Tuesday, 19 January 2010, 18:52 GMT
I'm sure we can make it pop more. Are we still discussing the addition of a "Packages" link to the main navigation bar? I think it's a good idea since it's a core element of our site.

FWIW a lot of browsers support URI rewriting which is very handy if you frequently look up Arch package details. For example, I'm using Opera 10.10 at the moment and have configured 'ap' and 'aa' to search the official packages and AUR repos respectively. To search our package database, I can just type 'ap <keywords>' from the browser's location bar.

But it's not addressed yet, so why close it?

As a side note, I did add opensearch support to the website so you can add it as a search engine in most browsers.

As far as I was concerned it was addressed, it's already been implemented in the upcoming archweb changes. That said, I don't mind the ticket staying open until it goes live; it just didn't seem like a big deal.

Great news about the opensearch stuff though, thanks for that.
