Description:

I seem to have never ending trouble with this combination of packages.
I have two kernels installed right now: 2.6.30 and 2.6.31.
2.6.30 is my main kernel now. I recompiled it and changed some wireless configuration to work with my card. Otherwise stock stuff.
2.6.31 is pure repository kernel.

When 2.6.31 came out, I tried using KMS. It worked, but compiz was giving me blank screen. With compiz off I all worked, but performance dropped from 1700 fps to 400 fps in glxgears. I disabled KMS for this reason.
2.6.30 does not have KMS enabled, worked fine.

Today I upgraded these packages:

upgraded libdrm (2.4.16-1 -> 2.4.17-2)
upgraded libgl (7.6-2 -> 7.6.1-1)
upgraded ati-dri (7.6-2 -> 7.6.1-1)
upgraded mesa (7.6-2 -> 7.6.1-1)
upgraded xf86-video-ati (6.12.99.git20091014-1 -> 6.12.4-2)

After that, I could not log into my system. I got to GDM, but after entering password, my system froze. I was able to log in via SSH, so just graphics froze. My search revealed segfault on Xorg.

With 2.6.31 kernel and KMS off it behaves the same. With KMS on, there is no segfault, but I get blank screen with compiz + performance hit.
For now I reverted back to previous versions of packages, but I'd like to get this sorted out.

I am attaching segfaulted Xorg log.
There is a thread about this in forums, more people seems to have this problem.

KMS isn't supported. Please make sure you disable it and try running Xorg without Compiz and xorg.conf. Then it should be stable. If you will get 3d accell. will depend on your type of gfx card.

Didn't know it was not supported, there was a lot of talk about it after 2.6.31, wiki how-tos etc...
Without it, it works fine.

Sorry, I probably did not make myself clear enough.
With the new, upgraded packages it DOES NOT work even with KMS dissabled.
It worked before, but now I get Xorg segfault.
I had to revert to older packages.

please test without compiz. what card is it?
Comment by Martin Dratva (raqua) - Sunday, 27 December 2009, 21:48 GMT
Works fine without compiz.
Card is ATI Technologies Inc RV515 [Radeon X1300]

Then I expect it to be a compiz problem. Please talk to the compiz guys and then if needed on the Radeon list.

What is the status of this bug with the latest kernel?

It has been a bit on a wild side recently. I updated to kernel 2.6.32.3 (I still kept the 2.6.30 as well).
There has been also an update to aforementioned graphics stack packages.
Now it works, when computer boots. Then everything is fine, but my machine tendst to feeze just before GDM starts or sometimes at GDM displayed stage.

This happens more with 32 kernel that 30, but occurs with both. Symptoms are usually like this:
Machine boots to X and I can see black screen with mouse cursor. Rarely GDM shows up, but without the main login window. Just background and bottom panel.
At this point machine does nothing. Numlock or CapsLock press reveals that machine still responds.
CTRL+ALT+DEL or CTRL+ALT+Backspace do not work.

When I try to switch to console with CTRL+ALT+F1 machine freezes. From here, only hard reset helps.
Strange is that if the machine manages to boot, everything works fine.

It usualy takes 1-3 hard resets, until machine starts.
I can not see anything in logs as if it is never written into logs, but I somehow managed to switch to console and I have seen a lot of errors.
I also managed to save dmesg to file before my machine froze, so I add this as an attachment to this message.

I really have no idea where to go from now, I am unable to decrypt those messages. It might not have anything to do with this, but it started with update of these packages.

status with latest 2.6.33?
Comment by Martin Dratva (raqua) - Friday, 05 March 2010, 15:22 GMT
I had a bunch of hardware issues, various things failing randomly. I even bought new motherboard, but then all suddenly stopped. I returned the motherboard and now everything works like charm. I am still on 2.6.32, but the problem seems to have vanished. There were also some updates to the packages afaik.
Consider this solved.
Thanks.
