Please provide more information:
- xorg logs
- xorg configuration file
- driver versions.

If your driver is not from the repositories, it needs a rebuild for the new server.

Does it work if you downgrade it ? Does it work with 'startx' from init tty1 e.g. ?

Same problem with GeForce2. I was forced change Device Driver to 'vesa' in xorg.conf to launch X.
Versions:
local/xorg-server 1.7.1-1 (xorg)
X.Org X servers
local/xorg-server-utils 7.5-2 (xorg)
X.Org utilities required by xorg-server
local/nvidia-96xx 96.43.13-2
NVIDIA drivers for kernel26, 96xx branch.
local/nvidia-96xx-utils 96.43.13-1
NVIDIA drivers utilities and libraries, 96xx branch.
