Details

Skype has been available for 64-bit Ubuntu for a few weeks now. Is there any chance someone can convert that into an Arch package?

no. because is not a native 64 bit binary. that package are you talking about is the same as bin32-skype from aur. it has 32 bit dependency.

skype for ubuntu 8.10 64 bit has:
depends: lib32stdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-21), lib32asound2 (>> 1.0.14), ia32-libs (>= 1.6), libc6-i386 (>= 2.7-1), lib32gcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1-21+ia32.libs.1.19)
