Description:
After upgrading to Gnome 2.28 the Root console isn't starting anymore. By trying to start it, it asks me for my root password, and after typing it in I can see a window called "Granting Privileges", which closes down after a few seconds. I guess that this is a problem with some privileges in some way, but I can't figure out how to change it, as it isn't mentioned in "System -> Preferences -> Authorizations".

Additional info:
* package version(s): Gnome 2.28

Steps to reproduce:
* Upgrade to Gnome 2.28
* Try to start the Root Terminal (Applications -> Accessoires -> Root Terminal)
* Type in your root password when you are asked for it
* See the "Granting privileges" window be opened
* See the "Granting privileges" windows beeing closed down again after a few seconds, while there is no Root Terminal at all

gksu has nothing to do with the old policykit authorizations dialog. I can't reproduce your problem here, the root console opens fine here.

So, what is wrong with my installation / configuration? I'm experiencing this issue on two different computers, so either I have messed something up with configuration (where can I look this up), or there is something wrong :(.

I have tried to identify the problem, but it really seems that something isn't working properly:

This is the debug information whenever I try to start the root terminal from a normal one using gksu:

[johnpatcher@vostro ~]$ gksu -l --debug gnome-terminal
xauth: -1a096def4e6479f617ed292da59552a7
-
display: -:0.0-
final xauth: -1a096def4e6479f617ed292da59552a7
-
final display: -:0.0-
STARTUP_ID: gksu/gnome-terminal/23276-0-vostro_TIME1027753024
gksu_context_run: buf: -Password: -
password from keyring found
DEBUG (run:after-pass) buf: -Password: -
DEBUG (run:post-after-pass) buf: -
gksu: waiting
-
^C

As soon as I hit "ctrl+c", which is indicated by the "^C" in the last line the root terminal opens up quite normal. I really don't know what the cause of this problem is, as the debug information doesn't tell anything related to an error :(.

Users running debian are experiencing the same kind of problems regarding to this thread (http://debianforum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=114551) in a german debian forum. According to the poster it is the fault of the new kernel 2.6.31, as it works just fine with 2.6.30 for him.

This would make sense for me, as I have upgraded my kernel also a few days ago.

Unfortunately there is no fix given, just a link to lkml (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/7/28/373), where Linus Torvalds and Alan Cox have some trouble with each other about the su-utilities of KDE, which should work quite the same as the tools for gnome, shouldn't they?

Seems to be solved with kernel 2.6.31.4-1, so this can be closed.
