Probably an upstream problem but ill jump on the wagon anyway...

Blank media is seen/works fine.

The problem i had was after canceling an active burn... and trying to format/burn again the modules crash/hang the system and device becomes unaccelable even after restarting.

The only salvation was formating it with poweriso in windows. After that it worked with wodim/growisofs again.

I guess that you are talk about 2.6.31, please in next time put packages versions.

This sound like an old upstream bug http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13727 for 2.6.31-rc1-git9 but is marked as fixed now.
