Sorry, I clicked "add" by mistake.

When upgrading to PHP 5.3 old modules should be removed, like mod_php5.so and similar, otherwise all sort of crazy things will happen, like inconsistent version, missing session API etc.

pacman indeed does replace the old package. So please describe exactly what the problem here is.

Problem is that I found /etc/httpd/modules/mod_php5.so side by side with libphp5.so

Now I have started from scratch with only php, apache and php-apache and the stock configuration files; I will report any issue on the default config

the operation which lead to the spare mod_php5.so was a system-wide upgrade with:

y -Syu

Also the old modules were all there in a 2006* directory

I just modified /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf by adding the following line:

LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so

This enabled back PHP5 support, which was disabled. Also the stock /etc/httpd/conf/extra/php5_module.conf does not contain any LoadModule lines, so this might as well be a bug since the PHP5 module is otherwise loaded nowhere.
