Same problem for me on Archlinux 64bit.
Tried it with package eclipse-subclipse and direct download of subclipse with Eclipse PLugin Manager.

I've tested this in one Ubuntu 8.04 (Virtual Machine) and works.

Data:

Eclipse Galileo 3.5:
Build Id: 20090920-1017 (Downloaded from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/galileo/SR1/eclipse-jee-galileo-SR1-linux-gtk.tar.gz)

Subclipse (Downloaded from: Update site: http://subclipse.tigris.org/update_1.6.x)
- SVNKit Client Adapter 1.6.4
- Subversion Client Adapter 1.6.4.1
- Subclipse Documentation 1.3.0
- Subversion JavaHL 1.6.6
- Subversion Revision Graph 1.0.7
- SVN Team Provider Core 1.6.5
- SVN Team Provider UI 1.6.5

And Java version "1.6.0_16" installed in both systems from package managers.

Check the error log wether you see libpango error there. Could be caused by that bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=291128 if the application also crashes/closes on closing Level 1 windows.

Workaround in https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=291128#c25 helped.
