The gnome-power-manager does not change its icon from AC to battery when supply to a laptop is removed. As a result, the system still uses the power plan that it should use when there is AC supply (like bright backlight, frequecy scaling for performance et al.) acpitool though is able to show the correct status as "discharging" once supply is removed.
