The Flash plugin does not produce sound in Mozilla, Firefox, and Konqueror. Graphical display works properly. Sound works properly for all other sound-related applications including those using these browsers.

flashplugin 7.0.25.0-1

mozilla 1.7.2-1
mozilla-common 1.0-1
mozilla-firefox 0.10.1-1
mozilla-thunderbird 0.8-1
konqueror [KDE 3.3.0-2]

The following sound-related plugin is also loaded:

mplayer-plugin 2.66-1

There have been some suggestions that changing the /dev/dsp permissions to 666 might resolve this problem, but this does not help.

this works for me... try starting the browser from an xterm and see if the flashplugin outputs any errors.

Starting the browser from an xterm doesn't show any flashplugin errors.

I've started the browser as root and the flashplugin DOES work correctly (i.e., both graphics and sound).

This is a permissions thing, but I don't know what to change to get it to work properly. Here's what I have in the /opt/mozilla-plugin/ directory:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Jun 22 19:23 nppdf.so -> ../acrobat/Browsers/intellinux/nppdf.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 48 Oct 1 23:37 nphelix.xpt -> /home/c2chan/Apps/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.xpt
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 47 Oct 1 23:37 nphelix.so -> /home/c2chan/Apps/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 691 Aug 22 16:17 mplayerplug-in.xpt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 243077 Aug 22 16:17 mplayerplug-in.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 58 Aug 19 00:15 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /opt/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2096844 May 27 11:42 libflashplayer.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 856 May 27 11:42 flashplayer.xpt

These are the default installed permissions.

I've resolved this problem by changing the default udev.permissions assignments. By default the relevant devices -- /dev/dsp*, /dev/snd*, and /dev/sound* -- have 0660 permissions. The Flash plugin works properly by changing this to 0666. (All members of users are also members of the audio group.)

In other words, the default entries:

dsp*:root:root:0660
sound/*:root:root:0660
snd/*:root:root:0660

are changed to:

dsp*:root:audio:0666
sound/*:root:audio:0666
snd/*:root:audio:0666
