Detailstotem with the gstreamer backend is being heavily worked on right now, and a first big release had just been made
it would be nice for us gnome users to have a fully functional totem-gstreamer available as well, so we can finally drop xine (and stick to only one multimedia framework) |

but gstreamer/totem isn't ready for prime time, it will take a few release from now.
so it will become default in time, but not now ;)
also try it out and submit all bugs to the gnome bugtracker ;)
