Examined some of the error statements most of which refer to kdeedu.

It seems that the ignore of kdeedu was ignored.

A normal procedure (--ignore) during downloads seems not to fit the new kde4-meta system. How does one know this?

Therefore this bug.............

As all packages are split now, your ignore will no longer match all of kdeedu. As you're doing an update to a new major version of KDE, your installed version of kdeedu will break anyways.
Your bugreport is not really useful: no error messages, no logs, it's not even clear what's wrong in this case.

--ignore might not work because kdeedu is a group now and a package on your current system. Maybe pacman does not handle this correctly.

Re: Comments...

When using ...pacman -Syu... I have always entered the --ignore items at initial entry.

This is recommended procedure.

No pre-knowledge of any conflicts that will result from using same.

Further, no indication that a conflict will result when the massive upgrade was encountered after entering the --ignore option.

No idea that the massive upgrade was imminent.

The error messages were standard statements that the package "exists in the filesystem" and were several hundred entries, mostly stating the same kdeedu package item "exists in the filesystem".

What's wrong is that the upgrade failed to install any packages and it isn't clear what's wrong which is the reason for this bug report.

I suspect that --ignore does not work with kde4-meta package downloads.

It may not work for future upgrades for kde4-meta packages.

It is not clear concerning the install of kde4-meta packages whether they can be installed singly along with existing kde4.x packages or whether the whole shebang is required.

I am advised by the arch news to file a bug report if the install fails...the bug report has the initial entry posted ....pacman -Syu --ignore vlc --ignore kdeedu.

Kdeedu was not ignored in the ensuing procedures and caused the upgrade to fail to install....apriori knowledge that --ignore would not work was not posted.

I think it is a bug in the options for -Syu and may affect future kde4-meta upgrades.

I have yet to complete the upgrade and will attempt it without --ignore kdeedu and report back.

Performed the following: pacman -Syu --ignore vlc

Installed pacman upgrade first........

Deleted all kde4-meta upgrades by answering no to the options.

The result was 45 packages upgrade began with the following result:

I am advised by the arch news to file a bug report which herewith exists.......

And the news also advices you to answers "Yes" when pacman asks you to repalce packages with kde-meta-*. Maybe that's not clear.

I am aware of the yes option which is the option I used to perform the subject download initially, which failed to install any packages ( including the 45 packages other than kde4-meta).

This was not done in the latest attempt in order to prevent kde4-meta interference with my -Syu.

The results have been posted and indicate a failed install WITHOUT KDE4-META installs.

I am advised not to use -Syuf when downloading upgrades of many packages (45 in this instance) and therefore I follow the arch news item and file this additional bug data.

Kensai reports that he used -Syuf with the kde4-meta download successfully.

I removed the kde4-meta entries deliberately to aid in troubleshooting this failure.

Using -Syuf after receiving the failed install in another HDD caused a catastrophic loss of terminal access and I had to re-install arch. In that instance, I had to chroot into the install because I needed hal in order to permit keybd and mouse at log-in with X and (Kde4?). The download did not start with a pacman upgrade in that instance which probably caused the failed terminal access.

I feel hal should be in rc.conf in the install list and optionally be removed at user discretion during the install procedure (or later).

So as it now stands, I have posted data for the latest attempt to -Syu without including Kde4-meta downloads and have an additional failed install and am advised not to use -Syuf but to file a bug report...herewith...............

This indicates that the problem of all failed installs may be due to package kdemultimedia-libkcddb.

I am not in the least anxious to introduce -Syuf to solve this install problem.

The kde4-meta packages may install in the absence of the kdemultimedia-libkcddb package.

The kde4-meta modules (packages) were installed with the exception of kdemultimedia-meta which had conflicts with k3b and kdemultimedia-libkcddb.

The kdeedu elements were permitted to download and install although I have no desire for them. I would entertain advice as to how to remove the many packages in kdeedu with an appropriate method with removes them all. Also would like to remove the games as well from kde-meta with an appropriate method of removing all.

The performance of this series of pacman procedures indicates a problem with k3b, kdemultimedia- libkcddb which is a kde-4.3.0-1 module not a -meta package presumably.
When I use --ignore kdemultimedia-libkcddb to remove the conflict, the download removes kdemultimedia-meta instead (or mebbe also!).

I need to understand how to control my downloads in view of these discrepancies in addition how to remove all undesired packages from kdeedu and kdegames (toys,too).

I am not in favor of --Syuf...-Syuw is preferable in order to permit troubleshooting.

I don't really get it. You have the following options:
* Upgrade everything with pacman -Syu and ansers pacman's questions with Y
* Remove kde by pacman -Rc kde; update with pacman -Syu and reinstall those packages you like

Using --ignore, just update some of the packages and even -f just wont work.

The posting I have made even from the title indicates that the answer to the options was made with --yes.

However, there was an ignore for vlc and kdeedu.

Following the downloads, as previously reported, the install failed with many hundreds of kdeedu package install errors...typically ..exists in filesystem.

Either the --ignore cannot be used or there was a discrepant pkg dependency in the 388MB of downloads.

Subsequent troubleshooting was utilized to narrow the problem down to k3b and its dependency kdemultimedia-libkcddb.

However, attempts to install k3b resulted in failure to install for the same dependency problem with kdemultimedia-libcddb.

Previously, I could install a package using ...pacman -S (package name) and it would reinstall from cache if the package was the latest.

What happens now is shown in my posts.

If I use pacman -Rc kde and remove kde thereby, and then do ---pacman -Syu... I will get the full-bore kde all over again with options to accept packages but I will also receive the k3b and its dependency all over again.

I have shown what happens if I proceed to --ignore kdemultimedia-libcddb...it removes kdemultimedia-meta.

I am unable to understand why this happens.

I cannot upgrade k3b.

I have many,many packages in pacman -Q | that I do not want.

Because these are separate packages I assume I must delete them singly. (wow!).

Removing kde will mean a long download and the same result even if I answer no to all the -meta packages because the k3b package will not install.

This will leave me with no kde unless I ignore k3b and its dependency which may or may not work with the new pacman -3.3.0-3 already installed. Then , if the --ignore works, I can download kde but again answer no to the -meta packages. This will take two hours.

The news item in arch does not describe fully what impact the -meta packaging scheme has on the installed system. It may satisfy some users system arrangements but I am quite satisfied with the "old" way and assumed when using the upgrade in pacman that I was upgrading as usual not redoing my whole kde system. I agree that I made a big oops in selecting -meta.

However, nothing ventured nothing gained. This is a bleeding-edge distro and I have moved along with it for six years even to x86-64 and ext4. My hdd is bleeding for sure.....
This upgrade was a disaster for me on two HDD's, the first had to be re-installed and this hdd won't upgrade k3b.

How do I remove -meta and leave Kde installed?

Will I , if I return to old kde, have to answer no to -meta for every pacman -Syu? I suspect so...(wow!). I assume that a simple --ignore kde-meta won't work!!! Mebbe that's incorrect?

Sorry, I am kind of lost here. You're mixing things up and try to do several things in one step. So please listen to what I have to tell.

The switch from the monolith packaged KDE to the split one is not trivial. We can only do this in a smooth way by using the meta packages. Those are replacing the old ones and depend on the new ones.

During update from KDE 4.2 to 4.3 you have no option to deselect any package, ignore it or whatever. This will always fail by design and there is no bug at all.

If you don't update to KDE 4.3 you cannot except that other KDE related packages can be installed (like K3b). They already depend on KDE 4.3.

So,you either have the options I told you in my previous post or you uninstall those packages you don't want to update; like kdeedu or kdemultimedia.

If you are still thinking you have a problem please describe in one sentence what your goal is and not how you tried to achieve it.

My goal is to return to the kde packages I had before this update that is kde 4.2 such that I do not have kde-meta packages proliferating my computer and how to continue using arch without the 4.3 -meta interference including pacman -Syu requirements to select yes or no.

This info you provide I interpret to mean I must accept -meta or never get to upgrade again since you state I cannot answer no to the options (no option to deselect any package). This upgrade has me completely lost and it isn't KISS.

If I don't want to update, I must uninstall according to your info. If i uninstall, must I uninstall twenty or thirty packages which are listed separately in pacman -Q? When must I uninstall, before I enter the pacman -Syu --ignore vlc ? Your comment is confusing to me (or you uninstall those packages you don't want to update;).

If I have to uninstall kdeedu BEFORE pacman -Syu, such a requirement is not spelled out for the upgrade. I have always used ...pacman -Syu --ignore vlc --ignore kdeedu... for some months now.

I also don't want toys or games. I do want multimedia 4.2

The -meta packages are installed many more than I desire

If you don't want to update to 4.3 because you don't like it I cannot help you; its just not supported to stick with old packages in Arch and will break sooner or later.

If you don't want the meta packages, you either can remove KDE before the update or remove the meta-packages afterwards. Here are the two options:

1) pacman -Rc kde; pacman -Syu; pacman -S kde (in the last step you can choose every single package you like; or instead of the whole kde group choose by smaller groups; see http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE_Packages

2) pacman -Syu; pacman -R kde-meta (here again you can remove the single packages by either their group or name: see http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE_Packages

This is actually very simple but you make it complicated by wanting the impossible like keeping KDE 4.2.

I think everything was said from my side and I still don't see a bug here.

I was advised to file a bug report by the news item because I failed to upgrade with a yes option in the initial upgrade. There was no indication that I could not use an --ignore for kdeedu which may have caused a failure to install, and I still don't know if I can use --ignore on -meta packages.

Why is there an option to say no if the upgrade as you describe it is mandatory? It seems that uninstall is the same as no to the upgrade to a kde-meta as I interpret it.

I am not enjoying this one bit and am not able to complete the upgrade of k3b.

Advise what you mean by (you can choose every single package you like;). Are these -meta packages you are referring to?

How do I remove all the kdeedu and toys and games packages? One by one?

I have now booted in my other HDD and find that all the -meta packages are loaded via ftp install.

I installed k3b with no dependencies associated with the install.

Why could I not install the same in the other hdd...because of --ignore kdeedu which I use habitually?

Perhaps this occured:

The kde-meta files were entered with a Y.

The k3b upgrade was also downloaded.

The -meta packages were installed first and the k3b dependency reported "in filesystem" when later install of k3b occurred and the install aborted.
