It makes it very poorly usable.

Steps to reproduce:
Just install openoffice-base (and openoffice-fr) and launch writer for instance.

openoffice-base install a shell profile file that do this: export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome
after the install, you relogin in to your account? if not, do it, or execute the command above before start OOo

I use kde, must I put this in .bashrc anyway ?
Comment by Gerardo Exequiel Pozzi (djgera) - Thursday, 16 July 2009, 19:29 GMT
Not necesary to put in your .bashrc, this is located in the file /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh that is executed when you do a login ;)

This fixes your problem?

/etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh is present.
And I rebooted this computer several times since I installed OpenOffice.

Even typing export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome && soffice gives the same bug.

Are there other values for this variable ?

Please attach your xorg.conf, this is a common problem with nvidia, though I don't know exactly what causes it.

Here it is, in full :

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "RandRRotation" "true"
Option "Rotate" "left"
EndSection
# End of file

What is your GPU? In my machine I have and 7300GT, and don't have any issues.
I think that cards like 8xxx/9xxx with nvidia drivers have some problems, there are many threads in nvidia forums about these cards. There are some workarounds.

Maybe the best place to question about this problem is in nvforums ;)

This is a 8500GT.

I just had the idea to launch a compositing manager (xcompmgr) and it solves the problem at the cost of a few system ressources.
On this computer this is an acceptable workaround (core duo), but on the other one with an FX card and an Athlon 1.3GHz, I would prefer to avoid this.
