I have just upgraded the firefox using pacman -Sy firefox

that happens when you upgrade only some packages. you should always use pacman -Syu

But I believe this as a bug. Just a browser upgrade destroyed my system. There was no warning/error etc displayed when I updated the firefox. Also this is not good, because I need to download more than 500MB of data to just upgrade my browser ?

Welcome to a rolling release distro. We just did huge rebuilds for readline and libjpeg- we don't guarantee that things work without doing a full system upgrade.

And destroyed your system? I highly doubt this caused irreparable damage.
