I have kernel 2.6, use udev and added dbus and hal to rc.conf.
Gnome-volume-manager seems to be running as well, according to Gnome's session manager.

Stuff that works: playing audio cds, opening burn location when inserting empty cd.
Stuff that doesn't work: playing dvds, mounting media when inserted.

this isn't a bug, you just didn't configure it the right way try killing gnome-volume-manager.
then start it in the console ;)
