What is the settings under /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi (
copied from /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-keymap.fdi ) ?

How do you configure your keyboard layout? My experience with
GNOME and having multiple keyboard layouts set is that sometimes
it switches from one to the other. Given the fact that pressing
the multimedia keys brings up a different application that shows
the volume level, I think the keyboard is switched to the layout
set in that application.

i've configured layouts with gnome-keyboard-properties. and if
multimedia keys turned off (gnome-keybinding-properties) they
change layout anyway.
