All GNOME-associated icons are replaced by an icon with an x in the middle as seen in this screenshot

http://members.rogers.com/jrutley/gnome-error.png

There is no desktop background, and the desktop context menu is gone as well.

After I closed down X, I noticed a bunch of "could not load icon" and GTK+ messages. I can provide those if someone can tell me how to capture them.
At the moment I'm logging in through vc/1 and typing "startx" to get into GNOME.

Are you using an SVG icon theme? Since libcroco got an upgrade, librsvg is broken in archlinux. This seems to be fixed in librsvg that's in testing.

Try rebuilding librsvg from abs and your problem should be over.

I upgraded to GNOME 2.8, and those icons are now back. To be honest, I don't know what icon theme it is. :(

I noticed as well that the desktop icons were missing -- it's as though the /home/username/Desktop folder didn't get loaded.

After upgrading to 2.8, my background was still black (until I changed it with Desktop Preferences->Desktop Background) but the icons are still not present on the desktop, and there is still no context menu when you right-click, which is the same behaviour as 2.6.

The problem has mysteriously gone away. :(
At some time between going for lunch and coming back, everything is back to normal.
