a fresh user has the sames problems ?
do you have an up to date system.
i got 3 systems running the new gnome and i can't reproduce it.

I created a new user, logged in, created a textfile. Tried to add an application to the text/plain mime type. Got the same error.

I have a quite up to date system. The only thing held back is mozilla and epiphany. (Due to my stupid bank requiring no more than mozilla 1.6)

Looking at the .xsession-errors i think it looks like a permissions error. How do applications added by the user work in Gnome? (Where do the information get stored?)

i think i found it.
try removing from /etc/profile.d/gnome.sh the line with XDG_DATA_HOME.
this env should point to your home dir. and not /usr/local etc...

Yep, that seems to do the trick. When removing that line it starts working. Thank you very much.

Ok, maybe a stupid question, where can i find it? I can locate it on the archlinux web over packages. But where can i download it? (Noted also that there exists a gnome-common in 2.8 why do we use the gnome 2.4 dito?)

Found it now. Just had to wait a little longer :-) I'm still able to add applications for mimetypes with this.
