it was decided not to include mplayer GUI. there are other frontend like smplayer that is better that the gui provided by mplayer.

Maybe the desktop file could include xterm -e mplayer.
Although i am almost certain that theres gonna be bug reports afterwords about a non working desktop file, ask xterm to be included as a dependency, or use any of the thousands other terminal emulators instead of xterm.

Why the need for a terminal emulator? I think a simple desktop file like the one I attached would do the trick.

what's the purpose of adding it? if you miss another entry in the menu, i think you should make it manually :)

For me it's not about the menu entry, it's about the shortcut to mplayer if I click a movie file in Gnome.

Adding a desktop file to get correct file associations is fine, but it shouldn't show up in the menus. The commandline version of mplayer won't display anything when launched without an audio file.

What's the decision?
the .desktop file hasn't been added to extra/mplayer yet
imo, Jan de Groot is correct.

If we are not going to add the .desktop file, can we close this?

we are gonna implement that on the next rebuild.
