Tested and can confirm VLC currently in the repo will not open an rtsp url.

Rebuilt VLC with the --enable-realrtsp configure option on my i686 machine. Tested it, it fixes the issue with opening rtsp urls, however I only got sound from that link, no video, there is an error re no decoder for RV30.

This is the output from the terminal:
$ vlc rtsp://a1054.v7870a.c7870.g.vr.akamaistream.net/ondemand/7/1054/7870/v0001/mitstorage.download.akamai.com/7870/6/6.046j/f05/lecturenotes/ocw-6.046-12sep2005-220k.rm

[00000414] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `RV30'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

This is the output of the error msg that pops up in the gui:
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "RV30". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

(More here about RV30: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=58919&p=196616&hilit=rv30&sid=cce2edd072600c1e77b20248a7afbcc3#p196616

But yes, --enable-rtsp allows opening of rtsp:// urls.
