Description:
When I start autofs, the following is shown in syslog:

Apr 27 08:56:50 winnb000488 automount[7624]: syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]

Searching the net, I foundautofs@linux.kernel.org/msg06181.html"> http://www.mail-archive.com/autofs@linux.kernel.org/msg06181.html which refers to http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/storage/autofs/autofs.git;a=commitdiff;h=b8e06337764df00b30901c7787e0d1861c2f9901

If I don't misunderstand things, then there's a patch which makes this error go away.

Until it is applied, the workaround to add to /etc/nsswitch.conf

automount:files

works for me.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
Name : autofs
Version : 5.0.4-4

--($ /)-- pacman -Qo /etc/nsswitch.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf ist in filesystem 2009.01-1 enthalten

* config and/or log files etc.

The link to the autofs mailinglist is broken. Please use http://krz.ch/266c07 instead.

the patch is for autofs-5.0.2, it is applied from 5.0.3 so I don't understand why doesn't work

Comment by Dieter Plaetinck (Dieter_be) - Saturday, 13 June 2009, 11:59 GMT
OP: you sure you're using 5.0.4-4 ?
i'm using 5.0.4-4, I don't have the automount entry in nsswitch, but i get no such errors in my syslog when stop/starting autofs.
Comment by Dieter Plaetinck (Dieter_be) - Saturday, 13 June 2009, 12:14 GMT
Aha, after adding this line `/var/autofs/net -hosts` in my auto.master i get the same errors.
(the line in question is supposed to replace auto.net, see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=197824 and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71219 Too bad it's so hard to find documentation about this)

and btw for me it shows up in daemon.log, not syslog

No assignation, no activity, what's the status of it ?
Comment by Allan McRae (Allan) - Monday, 25 January 2010, 07:41 GMT
Unassigned myself as I have never used this package. However, if someone posts a fixed PKGBUILD here, I will see the comment and do the rebuild.

Dieter_be: Could you please try to compile from current HEAD and check if the bug is still there? Just to be sure we don't duplicate work. Gitweb interface can be found at [1]. Clone URL is [2].

jep.
I used the pkgbuild from abs, but modified it to use git. (so the sed command and the same configure flags are in there)
using stock configuration.. same error as before..

here's the autofs-git pkgbuild:

Sounds like an upstream bug then. Could you please report it on the autofs mailing list?
Comment by Dieter Plaetinck (Dieter_be) - Monday, 16 May 2011, 20:39 GMT
Hmm, http://freshmeat.net/projects/autofs (url shown in package info) mentions no mailing list.
but http://www.autofs.org/autofs-man.html mentions autofs(at)linux.kernel.org . is that the one?
Comment by Lukas Fleischer (lfleischer) - Tuesday, 17 May 2011, 16:32 GMT
Dieter_be: Yeah. Check `man automount | less -p ^BUGS` :)

read on the ML:
> There were major changes to the kernel automount code in the 2.6.38 and
> there have been a number of corrections along the way, with this patch
>being the last one for known problems.

> I recommend staying with 2.6.37 until 3.1 is available.

I guess we'll soon find out..

Any news in this area? 3.1 was released quite a while ago. Unfortunately, the autofs sources and the mailing list seem to be currently unavailable (probably still due to the kernel.org compromise)...
