I just noticed that pygtk-2.14.1-2 now has python-numpy as a dependency, which again has 3 other dependencies: python-nose, lapack and blas. Is this really necessary, and why?

Its a matter of developers not building in a clean chroot again..

python-numpy

Look very deliberate to me... Pays to check facts.

This was changed on purpose, but it's done wrong. python-numeric is no longer developed and should be replaced by python-numpy. The issue here is that pygtk isn't patched for python-numpy, so it doesn't use it at all.
As upstream still hasn't patched numpy into pygtk, I don't like this change and would like to have this reverted.
