I use openjdk6 on an x86_64 system, I was able to get CJK characters displayed properly in CGoban3 (www.gokgs.com) before, but recently discovered (probably after last update) that all CJK characters are displayed as blank squares.

According to another user, scim 1.4.8 was working fine in java apps:  FS#12356 . You could try using the patch refered in that bug report. The user said it was not necessary but maybe it's needed in your case.

Also, the arphic fonts were updated. They are now in a TTF collection, openjdk6 can only use the first fontface. That might be the problem if you are using these fonts. Try downgrading them to see if it will fix it.

I solved the problem thanks to your hint about arphic fonts being a ttf collection now, by copying /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk/jre/lib/fontconfig.properties.src to /.../fontconfig.properties and changing ukai.ttf to ukai.ttc there. I simply overlooked this one letter change before.
