A couple of very annoying bugs are reportedly fixed by building nedit against open motif instead of lesstif.

can't seem to find the URL for the other, but it was also a lesstif "bug", IIRC.

I tried to build nedit against openmotif 2.2.3, but I'm not sure whether it will improves things :

I've been using nedit 5.5-rc's for a while, I think they have actually enabled some lesstif workarounds in recent versions... hold off on this for a while, I'll let you know if 5.5-rc2 fixes the problems I was seeing.

The problems seem to be fixed by a 5.5-rc2 build. I'd say you can close this if you'd like.
