A problem with the AUR as it stands is that there are quite a few out-of-date packages still owned by users. People post updated PKGBUILDs in the comments (and a lot of times it's just a version bump), but it's not very elegant.

My proposition is that we should allow users to offer alternative PKGBUILDs - a better solution than posting in the comments - which, if given enough votes (perhaps as a % of the package's votes, to account for more or less popular packages), can become the default PKGBUILD. If the package maintainer wants to keep maintaining the package, he simply uses good contributions :)

This may require some tweaking as an idea...

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/3528?project=2 is an alternative solution, but IMO not comprehensive. This should exist somewhat in this idea, anyway - alternative PKGBUILDs should be removed after a certain period of time.

Reason for closing:  Won't implement
Additional comments about closing:  This needlessly complicates the AUR.
Adopt a package if you want to update it.

You should never be posting PKGBUILDs in the comments.
If it gets to that point you should be posting to aur-general requesting
for that package to be orphaned.

I have twice posted a PKGBUILD in comments to be courteous when demonstrating there is some problem. I don't necessarily want to say "give up the package I'll do it better" or "here is some problem go fix it man!"

Well, that's what you're essentially saying by posting a PKGBUILD,
so just email them to the maintainer instead,otherwise ask for the
package to be orphaned.

Perhaps it's more a "problem" of AUR mantainance... maybe we should organize an AUR clean-up simmilar to the repository clean-up.

I think this suggestion would worsen the problem. You would end up with even more packages wanting to be maintained. And what if people start posting alternative packages for the alternative packages? There should be only one PKGBUILD per package. Other solutions address this problem in a better way.
