Not sure if it does this on the 'core' CD. On the 'ftp' CD (beta2), when selecting packages, there is no facility to quickly see the description of that package. IMHO the description files in the core.db.tar.gz archive that the CD must download to see the names of the packages should also be used, and the installer should give version numbers and descriptions if you press a key on a package.

This seems fairly simple, and would save (at least me) a fair amount of time when I'm figuring out how much cruft I can remove from the install :)

Makes sense. With dialog (the ncurses dialog we use) I don't think you can press a key to get a popup for a package. I'll investigate.
Maybe we could print a (cut-off) version of the description next to each package.

now, when hovering over a package, in the bottom you'll see:
