Afaik this is caused by a bug within the nvidia beta driver. Try
nv or vesa to verify this. It's fixed with the 180.xx drivers.
(Well in that case the problem is that you cannot use the 180.xx
driver with older hardware)

changing the driver to nv in xorg.conf indeed fixed it.
