Not sure how necessary this is, but I would prefer NOT patching the kernel here.

The webpage linked also contains a source tarball and a Makefile to build this out-of-tree.

I'd recommend making a PKGBUILD for this and putting it in the AUR for now. No need to patch the kernel

Is there anything wrong with uploading the PKGBUILD to the AUR? How many users need this?

i agree if making this optional is better, uploading to AUR makes more sense here.
