Forgot to mention that I'm running xorg with hotplugging, so no xorg.conf at all.

Let's see if the logs are willing to attach now...

Something is overflowing a buffer, which causes your slowdowns and eventually makes whole Xorg unusable. I haven't been able to reproduce this problem yet, but some other developer did and it's a known symptom upstream (note the symptom: you'll find several bugs, all with different causes upstream, with this error message).

Does the problem go away when removing the synaptics driver from your system and restarting X? This could help us to track down the source of this bug.

No, removing the synaptics driver doesn't help. And restarting the X requires restarting the whole system, since all the key inputs are lost somewhere in the X.

I have the same problem on a Lenovo N200 3000.

The problem seems to have been corrected in a recent update. I can now run my system without the usb mouse attached. Current program versions are:
** xorg-server 1.5.3-4
** xf86-input-evdev 2.1.0-1
** xf86-input-synaptics 0.99.3-1
** xf86-video-ati 6.10.0-1
