It would be nice if Arch forums let you use gravatars for your avatar.

From the gravatar website...
«A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an avatar image that follows you from blog to blog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites.»

Here's some references:

http://punbb.informer.com/forums/topic/5352/atom/ <- I didn't look into this closely, but it seems to be a plugin to allow it.

Can you find an upstream plugin to support gravatars? I'd totally support this.

I'm not really responsible for the forum. I'm not sure if anybody really is, but Simo's probably the most likely guy.

We like to keep things as vanilla as possible, mind. ;-)

The idea does not sound that bad at first. I know this might sound very paranoid, but I see onne problem: This requires to send the mail address of everybody to the gravatar.com server on each request. OK, even if only a md5sum hash is used here it is a perfect system to track users across several web sites.

I don't say that they do it, but it is quite easy to see when a certain users visits which site (and because the whole referer is sent one new which topic he actaully watches.

Sorry, I had to point this out. But I could imagine an implementation which just loads the avatar image from gravatar ONCE (e.g. with an option in the users profile) and store it on our server.

I don't think that's really Arch's concern here. As long as the old-style image upload is supported and the default, all is well. This is also usable if Arch/punbb supports hotlinked avatars, since the url is regular.

Right, I just played tha "bad guy" here to show that just putting the reference implementation on our server might introduce some unforseen problems.

A quick search shows me nothing.
http://ianpurton.com/integrating-gravatars-into-punbb-forums/ this is close, except we don't want to just do it if there is no avatar set (to assuage Pierre's concern). We'd want it to be configurable.

Alternatively, if we could set it up you can use an avatar from a URL, we could just tell people to use something like:
http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=<md5sum goes here>&size=80

The latter is what I meant by hotlinking images. I think it's more KISS and easier to implement. Also it's more flexible. I'm in favor of that implementation, since there seems to be upsteam-approved method.

Seems like punbb devs don't like the idea of hotlinked avatars: http://punbb.informer.com/forums/topic/3213/avatar-hotlink/

What's your opinion? "Patches welcome"?
