Details

Description:
If I enable BackingStore in the Screen section of xorg.conf, X crashes randomly every few minutes. I use KDE and compositing is enabled.

Additional info:

kdebase 4.1.3-1
xorg-server 1.5.3-2
nvidia 177.82-1
* config and/or log files etc.
nvidia driver in use


Steps to reproduce:
Enable BackingStore in xorg.conf, start KDE, play around and wait for the crash to come :) (<15 minutes on my laptop)

Steps to reproduce:
Enable BackingStore in xorg.conf, start KDE4 (kdemod)wait for the crash to come :( (<5 segs on my desktop)

We can't fix this, as it's probably a bug in the nvidia driver. As backingstore is not the default, I don't consider this as a bug.

I definitly consider it as a bug as the option BackingStore is mentioned almost everywhere as an optimization. I am not sure though if you can fix it... Just posted it here hoping that somebody knew a fix :)

Nvidia "optimizations" cause a lot of problems. X crashes, white system trays in KDE, etc. If any optimization causes regressions, you should disable them. If they were stable optimizations, nvidia would have enabled them by default.
