Description:
Webcam does not work with kopete: when trying to configure the webcam in kopete "Options", only a blue screen is displayed instead of the webcam image.

I have tried with the built-in webcam of my laptop (Chicony webcam: module ov511) and a Philips USB webcam (module: pwc) with no success

However, when trying to use the camera with webkam (found in AUR), both webcams work perfectly.

Additional info:
* package version: kopete 0.60.3
* When running kopete from the konsole, the following messages are repeated while trying to use the webcam:
VIDIOC_REQBUFS error 16, Peripheral or ressource busy
VIDIOC_STREAMON error 16, Peripheral or ressource busy
VIDIOC_DQBUF error 16, Peripheral or ressource busy
I have checked and no program is trying to simultaneously access to the webcam.

Steps to reproduce:
In kopete, go to Options -> Configure -> Video thumbnail
Alwys reproducible

I have a similar experience, although I get a black screen instead of the webcam image. If you keep kopete running (even after closing the configuration window), the webcam is unusable in other applications. If kopete is not running or you did not try to use the webcam in kopete (for configuration or otherwise) yet, the webcam works fine in other applications (webkam, cheese, motion).

Something worth mentioning too: I am using an iSight webcam (module uvcvideo)
So I do not think it is depending on the module for the webcam :)

I don't have a webcam so I fear I cannot help that much here. Did you read http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=Kopete_Webcam_Support or search the web for similar problems (and solutions).

Nothing there to help me... hopefully it gets fixed soon.

No help in the KDE wiki. Both webcam (ov511 and pwc) are reported to be working with kopete. The only issue which may be related to our problem is the one concerning uvc webcams:

From the wiki:
"Can we expect to see UVC cameras support (http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/)? Kopete shows only green screen when you try to use the camera. Other software (Skype, aMSN) work fine with this driver.
UPDATE: UVC camera (Logitech 9000 Pro) works for me with Kopete 12.7, Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) out of the box."

Our problem is similar: green screen whith kopete while working with other software... May be because kopete version in arch is too old?

Update:

I have checked on my computer, and it appeared that the uvcvideo module was always loaded prior to ov511 or pwc loading. Without this module, the image displayed by kopete with the philips USB webcam (pwc) is plain white (but not green!) while the integrated webcam (ov511) is not working and requires uvcvideo to work (with cheese, xawtv or webkam...).

Conclusions:
1. My integrated webcam is an UVC cam and not an OV511.
2. it may be a problem of the arch version of kopete with UVC webcams since it seems to have been solved on ubuntu hardy...

It is not a problem with uvc webcams only, i have an Apple iSight and i am confronted with the same issue.

Erwin, according to what you said earlier (11/28), and to the linux-uvc website, the Apple iSight webcam is supported using... the uvcvideo module!

Ow... have to admit... thought they put it in one of the apple* modules, but I checked it and it is indeed the uvcvideo module. Sorry, so many modules and I had a lazy moment :)

I juste started my computer with a kubuntu liveCD and the webcam is working fine with kopete. I will try to find the differences between arch's and kubuntu's versions of kopete, but the message log was not very useful...
