Since the upgrade to Xfce 4.4.3, xfce-mixer can no longer be installed as a panel plugin. The problem is in /usr/share/xfce4/panel-plugins/xfce4-mixer.desktop. The last line should read: X-XFCE-Exec=/usr/lib/xfce4/xfce4/panel-plugins/xfce4-mixer-plugin Also, the above path seems a bit strange, with xfce4 repeated twice. Additional info: * package version(s) xfce4-mixer 4.4.3-1 Steps to reproduce: Try to add xfce4-mixer to the xfce panel. (This bug will also remove the mixer if it was already present)

FS#11938seems to be equal to this. Marc's solution works fine for me.
