Details

Description: After upgrading to gimp-2.6 this week, KDE shortcuts are still pointing to /usr/bin/gimp-2.4. There is already a /usr/bin/gimp symlink to /usr/bin/gimp-2.6, so I just manually edited my gimp menu item to point to /usr/bin/gimp instead of /usr/bin/gimp-2.4 (or -2.6).

Note: On this particular box, I have blocked KDE4. Is this shortcut problem non-existent in KDE4? If so, nevermind this bug, sorry to bother.

Additional info:

* package version(s)
kde-3.5.9
gimp-2.6

* config and/or log files etc.
Edited KDE shortcut in K Menu -> Graphics -> "Gnu Manipulation Program - Image Editor" -> Application tab
to point to /usr/bin/gimp (instead of /usr/bin/gimp-2.4)

Steps to reproduce:
Start with a system with gimp-2.4 installed using KDE3 as your Desktop Environment.
Do a pacman -Su to upgrade gimp to version 2.6
Try to start gimp from KDE shortcuts (or context menus)
Error reports that gimp-2.4 is malformed or missing

Reason for closing:  Not a bug

This only happens when you manually edit the gimp shortcut, as you have a local override file in your ~/.local directory. It's completely normal that this file will not get edited.

I do agree however that the installed .desktop file should reference gimp and not gimp-2.6.

I can confirm this on KDE4, too. And I'm pretty sure I did no manual editing of the shortcut (I'm not at the Arch box right now so I can't check what I have or don't have in ~/.local).

I think Jan is right here. If you did not override your menu config it should work. At least it does for me; using KDE4 and Gimp 2.6.

I have found a gimp.desktop in my ~/.local dir, so perhaps I have manually edited the button in the past. Good information to know.

The location of the file:

$ find ~/.local/ -iname gimp*
/home/myuser/.local/share/applications/gimp.desktop

I removed the "/home/myuser/.local/share/applications/gimp.desktop" file, and KDE shortcuts have changed to /usr/bin/gimp-2.6.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Perhaps this bug could be a feature request to have the shortcut point to /usr/bin/gimp (instead of /usr/bin/gimp-2.6)?

OK so I also had this file present. I'm obviously confused how this whole thing works because I know that some time ago I created a Gimp icon on my _desktop_ and I would never dream that much later it would affect a Gimp shortcut in the KDE _menu_, yet it does. Anyway deleting the file solves the problem, that's good enough for me now.
