Reason for closing: Not a bug
Additional comments about closing: One of the front channels in kmix was muted, how that happened automatically after the upgrade is still mystery.

then run speaker-test
I never had @alsa in my daemons list either previous to latest kernel update and the sound was working when i had 2.6.27 in testing.
I do not understand how it can work in testing and then mot in core :(
2) make sure you're in group 'audio' (run 'groups' to see)
if not - run 'gpasswd -a your_username audio'
(note that you will need to relogin for this to take effect,
so better just run the commands below as root)
3) make sure channels are unmuted in alsamixer ('M' toggles their state)
if it starts and shows card name then drivers are OK
4) run 'aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav'
if you hear the sound then the problem is somewhere in KDE's sound system.
FTR, it is better to ask for help on forums first before reporting problem as a bug.
Thanks to all of you for the help
