Description:
I run a multi boot system including two arch's (32bit and 64)
the fact the the regular arch install (never tried the quick one) enforces me to install grub
(no choice in the base repo, and later on when initiating grub install)

the problem is that even if i used a singel arch linux installation, my /boot resides on a separate
partition, and i usually want to keep it without change, so if i want to reinstall arch linux
i would like the option to keep the partiton as it is)

I am sorry if i actually sepated the topic into two different problems.

Thanks for a great distro

Reason for closing:  Not a bug
Additional comments about closing:  Grub install could always be skipped.

On your first point, no-one is forcing you to install grub anywhere, feel free to just skip the install bootloader step after you've done everything else.

yeah you are right i didnt think of that (it was late, i was tired ^^)
but the first issue stays it should be an option to be able avoid installation of the grub package

You might be right, but does this really rate being a bug report? Much less high priority?
Comment by Leon Vayman (vleon) - Tuesday, 07 October 2008, 02:10 GMT
well now that we clarified the fact that its not forcing grub-install (in other words breaking existing grub installations)
the severity should definetly be reduced, but i still think its a bug.
but i dont have the privilegs :)

Reduced to Medium.

FYI, quickinst doesn't force grub either.

Tpowa, I disagree, this is a bug. Do you not expect to be able to add Arch to a system that is dual/tri/whatever booting?
Comment by Aaron Griffin (phrakture) - Monday, 08 December 2008, 21:02 GMT
Should be fixed in the latest installer changes from Simo and Dan. Guys?
Comment by Tobias Powalowski (tpowa) - Monday, 08 December 2008, 21:05 GMT
Ah dale sorry, thought this was fixed, at least archboot setup has the choice to install lilo grub or don't do anything.

Wait, what is the problem here?
1. "I do not wish to install the grub package provided by Arch Linux developers."
2. "I want the option of skipping the execution of grub-install at the end of setup."

1 is fixed in the latest version of the installer- you can now select/deselect packages from the base category. 2 has always been possible by just skipping the last step of the setup script, and is definitely a prominent option in the latest version of the installer.

The other problem I see here- grub isn't the only thing that installs files in /boot. Obviously the kernel and initrd images are there as well.

I think he meant 2. but indeed good points Dan.
Comment by Aaron Griffin (phrakture) - Friday, 30 January 2009, 20:13 GMT
This should probably be closed.
Solutions:
* Deselect packages that install files in /boot
* Chose not to install a bootloader

Any reason for still keeping this open?
