Did you also update all drivers? It looks like you have an outdated driver on your system that still uses the old xorg-server 1.4 ABI, which will not work with 1.5.

package xf86-video-vga 4.1.0-5 needs to be rebuild. it will build on 8-31-08. All the packages for xorg-server 1.5.0 or 1.5.1 were no build until 09-07-08 or 09-13-08.

Somehow the package in extra is newer than the one in testing...

there is no package newer in extra. Its that it was not rebuild and put in testing so the extra one is the only package there. But since there was a driver in testing no one rebuild it. xf86-video-vga 4.1.0-5 needs to be rebuild with the newer testing packages. Also i found out that it still error out on me. Even if you remove this package it still will not make X -configure work.

The testing version was rebuild, but the vga driver doesn't support xorg-server 1.5 at all. The vga driver has been abandoned upstream and is not included in xorg 7.4. I can fix the vga driver so that it "works", but I will exclude it from the xorg group.

The vga driver has been fixed and excluded from the xorg-video-drivers group now. The via driver has been replaced by the xf86-video-openchrome driver and will get removed as soon as xorg moves to extra. The imstt driver will get removed from the repositories as it doesn't build with xorg-server 1.5 and is no longer part of the official Xorg 7.4 release.
