Works for me on Arch 64, I use my scanner all the time. I had an issue like this after installing Samsung printer drivers, it added a line to my /etc/sane.d/dll.conf file. If you haven't already, check the /etc/sane.d/dll.conf file and make sure !everything! but the backend you need has been commented out.
