DetailsI'm a horrible speller as most people who run Linux are. There is a way to enable gaim to highlight words that are spelled wrong, but it's a ./configure option, I believe it is --with-aspell. I've used it and it works nicely, but I don't feel like recompiling every new gaim release so I can spell correctly.

gtkspell is the only added dep, seems like a small enough requirement, and spelling support is optional in gaim..
