Details

Description:

The 5.6-7 package is only providing the "wide character" library versions. It lacks the "regular" versions. Apparently, it also deletes them. So at reboot you are completely stuck:

/bin/bash: error while loading shared libraries libncurses.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Boot scripts and various programs expect to find the regular lib. The boot sequence just hangs there, you can't do anything. It takes a rescue CD to fix matters.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
old = core/ncurses 5.6-6 for x86_64
new = testing/ncurses 5.6-7 for x86_64

* config and/or log files etc.
Recent, clean, up-to-date x86_64 Arch installation.
Testing repo enabled, bottom of priority list.
UTF-8 locale, as setup originally.
Old ncurses as installed originally, no special tweaking.

* Steps to reproduce:
pacman --sync --refresh testing/ncurses
shutdown -r 0

Why did you just update a single package? Yes, it's known your system won't boot with half-assed system upgrades, and no, it's not a bug, it's a user error.
