Steps to reproduce:

Log into console (only tested as root)

You will probably notice that not all key presses are recognized (some not at all, others only with double presses).

I recompiled the old mc-utf8 package and this does not suffer from this malady. But I'm afraid I don't have time to investigate further.

I could not notice such a behavior. Here all Shortcuts work for root (also with LANG=C).
Could you give a example what keystrokes you mean, something what you could reproduce?

I think I was a bit hasty in assigning the problem to mc. It seems to be a bit intermittent and possibly has something to do with starting slim from inittab, because I haven't (yet) been able to reproduce it when using gdm. Its main manifestation is the need to type a character twice to get it to appear.

mc works fine here (I'm using gdm though, not sure how it can be related to slim).
Please report upstream, they're doing lots of fixing these days.
@Aaron: please update to 4.6.2 + utf8 patch provided on the site (also 4.6.2.1 may be released soon)
