AFAIK grub doesn't contain any drivers and relies on your mainboard BIOS. If your BIOS doesn't allow USB keyboard usage, grub won't support it either.

Can you confirm that the exact same machine works with FaunOS and not with the official ISO?

I setup 2 headless servers last night with a USB keyboard. One with the "2008.06" i686 ftp iso, and one wtih the x86_64 bootable USB image. I was able to navigate the grub menus without any issues. Are you sure you have legacy USB turned on in the BIOS?
